HRH Crown Prince Moulay Rachid backs journalists to tell story of hunger and poverty

Rabat, May 22, 2008 -- His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay Rachid’s dedication to highlighting hunger and poverty-related emergencies has helped raise the awareness of the Harry Chapin Media Award (HCMA).

Offering distinction and prestige to independent and mainstream journalists, Crown Prince Moulay Rachid as a President of Marrakech International Film Foundation together with Euromed Audiovisual II Program by European Union has sponsored the HCMA.

Crown Prince Moulay Rachid’s support for the award will further honor journalists for their exemplary work and dedication on issues of hunger and poverty on a local, national and global level.

The Harry Chapin Media Awards, formerly the World Hunger Media Awards, were created in 1982 to encourage the media to tell the story of hunger and poverty. This includes work on economic inequality and insecurity, unemployment, homelessness, domestic and international policies and their reform, community empowerment, sustainable development, food production, agriculture, nutrition and the struggle for land.

An independent panel of judges, rewarding the best in hunger and poverty journalism, chose the winners of the 2007 Harry Chapin Media Awards.

The finalists for 2007 are:

Periodicals : "The Ugly Side of Micro-Lending" by Keith Epstein and Geri Smith (BusinessWeek); "Prisoners Dilemma" by Jarrett Murphy (City Limits Investigates); and "Ethanol's Deadly Brew" by Michael Smith and Carlos Caminada (Bloomberg Markets).

TV/Film : Lumo by Bent-Jorgen Perlmutt and Nelson Walker III (POV/PBS); In Debt We Trust by Danny Schechter and Robert Manning (Global Vision and AltaVista); Empty Lots, Empty Promises by Toni Guinyard (KCET-TV); and Rightful Yet Right-Less by Juliana Tafur (Evansion Cable).

Newspaper : "Poverty Peddlers" by Jason Grotto and Scott Hiaasen (The Miami Herald); "The Fight For Sugar Hill" by Paul Meyer and Melanie Burford (The Dallas Morning News); "Skid Row Stories" by Anat Rubin (Daily Journal); "No Relief" by Donald G. McNeil Jr. (The New York Times); and Africa Series by Lydia Polgreen (The New York Times).
